RTF stands for Rich Text Format. It was created by Microsoft in 1987 and is supported by virtually every word processor ever made — WordPad, Word, LibreOffice, Pages, and more. RTF files are larger than DOCX but have near-universal compatibility.
Windows' built-in WordPad application saves files as RTF by default. Many legal and medical software systems also output RTF documents.
