ODT and RTF to PDF: Converting LibreOffice & WordPad Files

Guide๐Ÿ“… January 2025โฑ 4 min read

Not everyone uses Microsoft Word. Millions of people use LibreOffice (which saves files as .odt) or the built-in Windows WordPad (which uses .rtf). While these formats are great for editing, they're not ideal for sharing. PDF is universally readable โ€” convert your ODT or RTF and share it with anyone.

What is an ODT File?

ODT stands for Open Document Text. It's the default format for LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice Writer โ€” two popular free alternatives to Microsoft Word. ODT is an open standard (ISO/IEC 26300), meaning any software can implement support for it without licensing fees.

LibreOffice is used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide, especially in governments, schools, and businesses that want to avoid Microsoft licensing costs. If you've received an ODT file, the sender likely uses LibreOffice.

What is an RTF File?

RTF stands for Rich Text Format. It was created by Microsoft in 1987 and is supported by virtually every word processor ever made โ€” WordPad, Word, LibreOffice, Pages, and more. RTF files are larger than DOCX but have near-universal compatibility.

Windows' built-in WordPad application saves files as RTF by default. Many legal and medical software systems also output RTF documents.
